Pastimes are the best times. Nobody knows this better than baby boomers. Growing up we were all about having fun, All The Time. We showed the world what Fun looks like, and how to have it. But then we became adults and we neglected this crucial side of ourselves.
Look at your grandchildren, now. They will never have what we had. They have all the electronic stuff - video games, movies on little smart phones, etc. It looks like their whole world is locked up on that tiny screen. That's no way to live. It's no way to have fun. Not like we knew it.
But you know what? The kids still enjoy running and jumping and doing the things we did when we were their age. And they have a knack for being creative and they want to be challenged and they want to achieve things, just like we did. Just like we still do. But the kids today don't have what we had.
You know what the kids today are missing?. . . They don't have a good ol' fashion, raw, digital-free, dusty, primitive, hobby store - the likes of which we used to sneak off to to come face to face with our wicked, though innocent, dreams. The hobby shack had all the stuff our parents didn't know about (or so we thought) but kept us busy. It had comic books, model airplanes, all sorts of things for collections - stamp collections, coin collections, bubblegum card collections, bottle top collections, etc. etc.
Hobby stores today? - phew! Just big old supermarkets with wide aisles and elevator music. Everything laid out neatly in sections, all for pioneer women who want to knit, sew, or weave, or assemble rag dolls. But nothing for us kids of yesteryear. Nothing exciting to do together with friends...
That's it! That's what's missing! What the kids don't have today is excitement from doing things together, doing things with their hands, doing things with their friemds. That's what they are missing - the great sense of cameraderie, doing fun projects together. Real friendships formed from common hobbies.
Come on, fellow boomers, let's go back to that dusty old hobby shack where they used to sell knick knacks and gags, and some party things for adults. And let's make our way to the more wholesome sections where we find the things that used to keep us focused and amused for hours and hours. And let's show the younger generations how to have fun.
